The Fire Born Novels Update

Hi everyone,

  I wanted to post a quick update regarding The Fire Born Novels, my Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal Romance trilogy.

My publisher, J. Taylor Publishing has closed their doors. All of their titles are being pulled/or have been pulled from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, KOBO, and all other venues where books are sold. As of now, and over the coming days, as books are removed, The Fire Born Novels will no longer be available for sale.

I wish J. Taylor all the best, and we part on good terms.

Please stay tuned for future developments regarding the trilogy, including the re-release and new Cover Reveal of TIED, Book One.

 Thanks 🙂

perf5.250x8.000.inddNormal people don’t believe their nightmares stalk them. They don’t fall in love with boys who don’t exist, either.

Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.

Or is that all in her head?

Layla doesn’t know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.

No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?

The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.

In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.

Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?

The answer may never be far enough … away.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

TORN (Book #2)Find Max.

That’s all Layla cares about. Not healing from the Fomore attack. Not finding answers to how she survived a fall that nearly killed her. Nothing will stop her. She will find him. She’ll even pair up with an overbearing Fallen Angel who’s hell bent on making everything harder than it needs to be if she has to.

Protect Layla.

For Max, nothing else matters. Not the bruises covering his body. Not the pain radiating from his broken bones. Not even his hands tied behind his back. He will find a way to save Layla, and the Fomore will pay if they’ve hurt her.

Every. Single. One of them.

In the second installment of The Fire Born trilogy, a new breed of villain looms—one Layla and Max will never suspect, and this killer has nothing to lose. Better yet, with Max and Layla’s deaths, victory is in the grip of the enemy.

Will Max and Layla find each other in time, or is it already too late for them both?

And coming soon ….

How far would you go … to protect the one you love?

Re-Release ~ INSTINCT by J.A. Belfield #Giveaway #HollowayPack

Today, I am sharing J.A. Belfield’s Re-Release of INSTINCT (plus a new cover!)

AND we have a Giveaway ,,, AND a sale.

perf5.250x8.000.indd

 FOR ONE WEEK ONLY: Jan 23 – Feb 1.

perf5.250x8.000.inddBlurb:

Werewolf Sean Holloway treats the village marketplace like a sexual buffet, though his charm does little to win over his latest entrée of choice. Whether because of Jem Stonehouse’s unique scent, her headstrong nonchalance, or the fact he is forbidden to see her by his pack’s rules, Sean wants her.

When Jem is nothing but flippant toward his advances, he pursues her with vigour, stealing moments alone with her without a libido-driven agenda.

The new and heady experience for him drives their relationship beyond romantic interest, and straight toward love.

That is, until Jem learns the truth about Sean’s heritage. Knowledge of the existence of werewolves leads to only one outcome: death.

In this prequel to Darkness & Light*, we are taken back in time, to the very beginning of Jem and Sean’s love-across-the-centuries relationship.

Did it end there? Or did Sean defy his own pack to save the woman he loves?

*Can be read as a standalone.

EXCERPT:

The marketplace had to be the best venue to pick up females. At the age of twenty, I would have been happy to visit every day, but James would not permit me. As Alpha, his commands were followed without question, so my visits were limited to once a week. I had to admit, it worked out better that way.

From fruit to art, to lace, to the blacksmith’s stall, I walked. Paintings of marketplaces often depicted them as cheery, colourful, and bustling with activity. The latter conception may have been correct; although, they leaned more toward grey and dreary than bright, and the air often filled with yells of anger and bitterness, as opposed to joyful greetings.

At least there were the scents: hams and boars’ heads, fruits, wines, the steam of cooking soups, and, my most favourite of all, the freshness of ripe women. Lorna Rushford, Helena Longbarrow, Matilda Thornberry named only a few, each of those alone bringing with her a memory.

The females noticed me as much as I did them, even though my past catches never approached, never asked why I had not called to visit, or if I would tend them again. Of course, my refusal to conform to the current trends in attire ensured I stood out from the other males who bothered to arrive. Whereas the women’s glances would be appraising, perhaps even hopeful, the men’s glares offered nothing but scorn for my dark trousers tucked into knee-high leather boots, and for the shirts I never bothered to secure with their woven laces. Men had been hung for far less than inconsiderate fashion sense, yet I did not care. I was not like them and never pretended to be.

A whisper drifted across, as I meandered through the crowd: “’Tis Mr Holloway, Eleanor.”

With a tilt of my head, I spotted the speaker leaning into her sister, who fluttered her lashes in a clear attempt to catch my attention.

Eleanor had turned out to be a worthy virgin. The scent of her blood had driven me wild as I had plunged into her.

I smiled to myself as I turned away.

Farther along, pausing to sample the crisp apples, I caught Mrs Lawson’s scent. The older ladies may not have been as pure, but they could not be denied their eagerness to please. For that reason alone, they made for an entertaining afternoon.

My nose lifted to track her, and I found the woman beyond a table stacked high with fresh loaves, hidden behind her fan, which she waved with vigour. I recalled that her petticoat had held many layers, and the removal of them turned out to be almost as much fun as the act itself. I wondered how she had explained the damage to her pompous husband.

At a new aroma begging for notice, my step faltered as my nostrils flared.

Strong, yet understated, alluring and seductive, the unsullied flavour carried the exceptional deliciousness of womanly musk. Possessed by a need to find the source, I tilted my head and allowed my nose to lead.

It should have been difficult, impossible even, to locate such subtlety amongst the overpowering wafts of food and body odours, yet the strong pull beckoned to me, drawing me on.

Whispers continued, as I passed one stall after another, but they no longer held my interest. My mind seemed only able to focus on the unfamiliar scent. Although it intensified with each step, I half wished for a stronger breeze to invade the clear morning, to bring me a more wholesome dose and appease my sudden and unbidden greed.

My eyes shifted, as I moved, searching. I skimmed over those who held no appeal, the ones whose flavour had already been tasted, until, at the end of the row ahead, I spotted two young women.

From the angle of their positions, I doubted they could see me. The purchasing of herbs distracted the darker haired of the two. Animated, she possessed a flamboyance which showed in her movements, and in her pleasant tones, as she bartered with the stall owner.

I imagined she would get her own way with the price.

To her side stood a fairer female, with a quiet calm that showed in the relaxed set of her shoulders. Taking a step closer, I studied her.

Appearing younger, almost lacking in confidence, she was also somewhat taller and certainly far more beautiful. I did not recognise her, yet could not mistake her scent. I had been tracking it for the past five minutes.

Leaning across the jewellery on the stall beside me, I caught the proprietor’s attention. “Who is the girl?” I asked, pointing toward the one who held me so rapt.

“Regular of mine.” He nodded and smiled. “The Stonehouse sisters often purchase my quartz and amethyst.”

As he spoke their name in a conspicuous overtone, the females turned.

Blue eyes, as dark as sapphires, appraised me from beneath wisps of blonde, and a smile widened the girl’s lips, as my own mouth curved at the corners.

Beside her, the darker girl leaned into the fair tresses of her sister. “Sean Holloway is a ladies’ man and not to be trusted,” she hissed, her words carrying to me with ease, before she walked off. When her sister remained, gaze locked with mine, the seemingly older girl called out, “Come along, Jem. Mother is waiting.”

My eyebrow twitched upward. Jem?

With her attention tugged back toward her departing sibling, she dipped her head and followed behind.

Still, the essence her body had left in its wake lured me, and, unable to do otherwise, I trailed after her.

The world is a still and quiet place when you’re dead.

The grind of stone on stone touches my dormant ears, and soft candlelight peeks through the slightest of crevices above me, warming my cold face. Bones creaking, my body shifts gently to the side, twisting through darkness, as the rich aroma of melted wax wafts over me. The sweet tinge of vanilla candles. There must be hundreds just beyond my tomb. I wonder who put them there, how they stay lit.

The spiciness of gardenia petals flits through my resting place, too, sharp and intoxicating as ever. They are perfectly pristine flowers, I remember, yet so delicate, they bruise too easily.

The soft, protective embrace of feathered wings catches my weakened sight through the widening rift overhead, protecting me in shimmering cream and gold plumage. I don’t know how long I’ve been here, buried underneath this heavy slab in the frigid cold of The City of The Dead, but I know MacCoinnich is near me. I feel his heat emanate the stone, the warmth of his undying love, even in death, fills me with hope in the dark.

Author Spotlight and New Release ~ Burdin of Choice by Alexander Nader

Today I’m happy to be hosting my friend, and fellow author, Alex Nader, whose sequel to Beasts of Burdin, Burdin of Choice has launched.

Check it out!

**************

perf5.250x8.000.indd

Title:  Burdin of Choice (Beasts of Burdin #2)

Author:  Alexander Nader

Publisher:  J. Taylor Publishing

Release Date:  November 10, 2014

Keywords:  ADULT Urban Fantasy

Blurb:

Ty Burdin is back. Back to drinking and back to avoiding demons. He is, of course, the leading expert in his field. In both subjects.

That’s probably why, when a customer offers him way too much money just to locate a missing car and some mysterious cargo, he readily agrees. The dude is human after all—Ty’s prime target client base.

Along with the money comes a slew of disappearances which Ty tries to ignore while tracking down that car, because, of course, those missing people might be demon related, and as he’s said before, that’s agency business. Not his. Period.

Until today.

Ty Burdin is to back drinking as well as everything he vowed never to get involved with again.

Question is, which one will kill him first? The booze, the demons, or the Agency?

**********

If you follow my blog, you’ll know I’m a fan of this series. Love, love Ty Burdin. Here’s my review on Amazon and Goodreads:

Once again Ty Burdin has me wrapped up and unable to close the book on his badass, smart witted, completely endearing nature. There is something so basic and pure about the way Alexander Nader breathes life into this character that it almost takes me back a step, and make me pause while I’m reading, just to take in what Ty has said. The simple, yet eloquent, while being utterly sarcastic, and also funny, way Nader portrays Ty is a skill I have yet to see done in the way Nader does it and makes this story hard to put down.

At the end of Beasts of Burdin, book #1 in the trilogy, I wasn’t sure where the second installment in the series would go, or how it would get there, but Burdin of Choice picks up at a run, and keeps running. The book has meat. It has emotion. It has heart. Ty is someone you want to know. Well done.

Can’t wait for book 3.

You can check it out on Goodreads

***********

For his blog tour stop, Alex agreed to answer some questions for me,

so let’s hear what he has to say:

LM: Burdin of Choice continues Ty Burdin’s story, and is the second book in the Beasts of Burdin Trilogy, how hard was it for you to get back into character, or did you go straight from Beasts of Burdin into Burdin of Choice?

 AN: I had originally planned for Beasts of Burdin to be a standalone novel. So when J. Taylor Publishing asked if I would write it as a trilogy, I kind of freaked out. I was super nervous (I had never written a sequel at the time) so I jumped right in to Burdin of Choice (BOC). Getting back in to character wasn’t as big a deal, but writing the story was. I think a lot of sequels just tell the original story over again to build on the success and I didn’t want that for Burdin. I took BOC in a new direction and that was scary for me.

 LM: Well, I really liked Beasts of Burdin and I loved Burdin of Choice even more, so I’m glad they pushed you to write a trilogy. 🙂 Ty, the MC in the story, (who is awesome) has quite a few issues bewteen fighting demons in the real world as well as in his own head, and that carries into the second book. One of my favorite scenes introduces new demons into the mix, as well as new characters. Do you plan which twists and turns each story will make before hand, or do you let the story and the characters lead you?

 AN: A little bit of both. I start with a rough outline. I’m talking rough. I mean like ‘getting fired on your first day of work’ rough. So I start with a plan, but there’s lots of room for adjustments as the story sees fit. I pretty much just plan on spending 170 pages ruining Ty’s life. I’m kind of a jerk like that.

 LM: It’s kind of our jobs to be jerks to our characters. 😉 Speaking of jerks, Ty might be considered as being a jerk sometimes, but he also has a sweet and endearing side, any inspirations behind the creation of his character?

AN: Ty has a bit out a mouth on him. It may, or may not, get him in to trouble at times.:) Ty started from your average noir character. There’s something about the honesty in those old novels and movies that strikes me. The characters all say how they feel and it’s funny and honest and a little hurtful all at the same time. Ty was born from that.

 LM: Any particular music you listen to when you write? Something that inspires your stories? Or do you write in silence?

AN: If I’m writing a really intricate scene, I usually write in silence. In general, I listen to instrumental stuff while I write too. Then again, here recently I’ve been listening to a lot of metal while I write. It really just depends. I have a hard time listening to music I know while I write because I think the lyrics instead of my words.

 LM: I almost always listen to music while I write, but sometimes I realize I’m singing … so I have to change the song. 😉 Anything special things you need nearby when you write? Favorite pen? Coffee?

 AN: A comfy chair, usually. I like to keep the wife close too. I make her listen to all the lines I’m proud of as I go along.

 LM: Good answer. Think that’s a wrap. 😉

I asked Terri to share her top 10 fantasy movies. Here goes:

  1. LotR – is there any other??

  2. The NeverEnding Story – FAV movie as a kid. Couldn’t get enough of it. I used to dream Falkor would come pick me up & take me to meet Atreyu. Le sigh.

  3. Stargate – while this might fall more on the Sci-Fi side, it’s a must-see for all adventurous dreamers.

  4. The Hobbit – duh.

  5. I’m going to cheat here and say Game of Thrones, cuz it’s MY list and I can!

  6. Princess Bride. “As you wish.”

  7. Shrek – because that donkey CRACKS ME UP!

  8. FROZEN!!! Love me some Olaf. Besides, I have two little girls. What did you expect?!?

  9. The Polar Express. The hubs would be sad if I didn’t add this one. It’s a Christmas must-see. Every. Year.

  10. Star Wars – all 6 movies. Again, it’s more sci-fi, but hey…I grew up BEING Princess Leia.

***** For the record, and being a HUGE fantasy fan myself, I concur with Terri. There is no other that could ever take the number one spot. LOTR reigns supreme. 😉

Escape.

That should be Hyla’s first thought as her people are chained and imprisoned for no imaginable reason.

Instead, Hyla finds herself traveling through a land void of Natives, with human soldiers pillaging in desperate pursuit of her, and in search of the mystical Pool of Souls—home to the one man who can save her people.

Or so she believes.

Led by her faith in the deity Fadir, Hyla is met along her journey by Jadon—a human male and fierce King’s warrior, and his childhood best friend Conlin—one of the few Natives aware of his Fadir-given Talents.

Protected by Jadon, guided by Conlin, and with an unfailing belief in the purpose of her pilgrimage, Hyla carries on.

Like her, though, another searches for the Pool, and should he gain access first, everyone she loves, and everything she knows, could be lost.

Forever.

#Teaser Tuesday ~ TORN (Fire Born 2) By Laney McMann

Today on the blog, I’m sharing the first teaser from TORN, the second book in the Fire Born Novels trilogy.

This excerpt is taken from a random spot in the book. 😉

Birds scuttled over the treetops as Justice and I continued through the forest, dusk settling around us.

“We’re walking in circles again,” he said, his steps slowing. “There’s no way we’re going to find the Merrows. And it’s getting dark.”

“I doubt they’d help, anyway. They always hated me.” The memory of Max and me running down the beach as kids, laughing, flew through my head, Max complaining that he didn’t want to see the water spirits. I’d replayed it over and over again for years, driving myself crazy, but it remained one of the only memories I’d kept after my mother washed me of them.

“What’s up with you?”

“I—nothing.” I wrapped my hand around the eternity bracelets and squeezed.

ARC Giveaway ~ Bullet by Jonathan Lister

J. Taylor Publishing are giving away FIVE ARCs of Bullet by Jonathan Lister!

Check it out!

A father’s love doesn’t bend, so what happens when it breaks?

Corruption, dark truths, and a new Alpha mean Leon Gray’s days of running without a pack are over. At least, that’s what everyone but him believes.

He’d rather be helping his teenage daughter navigate the landmine life of a full werewolf, finish out his servitude as bodyguard to a former Demos City reporter and, in all honesty, not be taken advantage of by a beautiful woman who really only wants him for his body—figuratively and metaphorically.

Of course, the only way any of that might happen is if he’s dead. That’s likely given the information the reporter has unearthed and the territorial battles already underway between packs. If only Demos City’s corruption didn’t have such deep roots—older than the bones of the city or any of the werewolves who’ve decided to claim it. A city can only take so many power hungry mongrels invading it at one time, and Leon can only take so much knowing his daughter lives within its boundaries.

War has come to Demos City.

It’s up to Leon to fix … what’s most important to him.

Ready to see what trouble Leon Gray’s getting into next? If you love werewolf goodness at its urban fantasy finest, then you are going to love this next addition to the Demos City Novels.

And J. Taylor Publishing is giving away FIVE ARC copies.

To YOU!

You don’t even have to be a book blogger!

Nope, so long as you are willing to leave an honest review* by June 16th 2014, you are eligible to enter.

Interested?

Then just fill out the form and keep your fingers crossed.

You have until midnight of May 28th, 2014 to enter.

COVER REVEAL ~ Burdin of Choice by Alexander Nader

Today, I am happy to share fellow author, and friend, Alexander Nader’s new cover for

Burdin of Choice,

the 2nd book in the Beasts of Burdin series.

Check it out:

 Burdin of Choice

Beasts of Burdin

by Alexander Nader

Release Date: November 10, 2014

Target Reader: Adult

Keywords: Urban Fantasy

Back of the Book

************

** I gave the first book in this series 4 Stars. Here’s my review on Goodreads:

Still grinning. I could say that the plot was tight, the story moved at the speed of light, and I liked the new approach on demons versus the world, and that would all be true, but even more than that— what kept me turning the pages was Ty. His voice is fresh and witty and sarcastic, and I found myself getting wrapped up in his words, the way he talked, the way he saw life. Really a great book that pulled me out of my own head and put me in someone else’s. For me, that’s the benchmark of a good story. Can’t wait to see what Ty gets into in Burdin 2.

EXCERPT RELEASE ~~ TORN (Fire Born #2) by Laney McMann #YA

Hi, everyone.

Today, I am thrilled to release the excerpt for TORN,

the 2nd book in The Fire Born Novels series.

Below is the first chapter.

Hope you like it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ONE
Layla
Sunlight seared my face, and my fingers dug into hot sand before a cool shade fell over me.
“Teine?” A soft voice called my name. Someone pulled on my arm.
My head lolled to the side, but my neck caught on a crick and refused to move further than a couple of inches.
“Teine? Can you hear me?” Soft wisps tickled my face, even as my head pounded above my left ear.
My eyelids opened and closed, scratching against the corneas like sandpaper—my mouth dry, like paste. Though blurry, a figure loomed over me.
“We have to go. Hold on to me.” A gentle squeeze of my hand made my fingers flex.
“Max …” My voice cracked, word slurred; my tongue seemed too large for my mouth. I raised my arm, but it thumped to the ground at my side with the weight of a lead pipe.
“Shh. Do not let go.”
My heavy arms swung up on their own. I attempted to clasp my hands, to entwine my fingers, but they slipped back down to my sides with a dead thud. Vision refusing to cooperate, my eyes slipped in and out of focus. “What … happened?”
“You will be all right.”
“Max?”
“Shh. Save your strength.”
Oh, god.
Max.
I fell … We fell. It was so hot. Too hot, and …
#**#**#
“Layla!” Max’s voice tangles in my head along with a rush of wind whistling in my ears and the roar of fire surrounding my body.
 “I’m coming!” The pulse of pure energy surging through my veins is a fear I’ve never known—a heat I can’t control.
Where once white sand once stretched for miles, a war scene bristles. Dunes flattened to nothing. Bits of charred lumber and ash blanket the beach. Sea oats have been ripped free by their roots and lie smoldering, bright red embers shining up like sinister eyes.
The explosion has unleashed an acrid off-charge, tainting my surroundings in tendrils of fire and smoke streams. Sparks sizzle through the atmosphere, leaving traces of color in the air ahead of me, brought on by wicked lightning strikes illuminating the sky.
Streaks of green and white flash in all directions—fingers of electricity lacerating the clouds—like a fireworks display gone wrong.
Growls of building thunder vibrate my body before falling silent, and a cackling laugh echoes around me, taking my attention to the dune’s edge.
Crows line the shore, still as statues—miniature militant soldiers. Ebony feathers lay, as if methodically placed, around a broken body carpeted in withered gardenia petals. Blank, flat crystal grey eyes stare fixed and unmoving.
Cold shock ricochets through my core. “One will kill the other. Say goodbye to your beloved.” The voice, so foreign yet chillingly familiar, snarls inside my head.
A guttural vibration quakes the sky.
The atmosphere shifts, and the heavens erupt.
“Max!”
#**#**#
“Shh, Layla, I’m right here.” Max’s face swims into view, stained in soot and blood, his dark eyes gazing down. “Are you okay?” Breathing hard, he crouches over me as I lay in the sand, the outline of his silhouette darkening by the sun at his back. “We need to get out of here.” He scoots forward. “Can you stand?” His fingertips brush my hand, and his firm hold makes me gasp. His gaze roams over my body—my face. Black irises taking over from the usual light grey … “Why are you looking at me like that?” His voice echoes around me as if he’s screaming, but I can barely hear him.
“You were dead,” I say in a whisper, staring up at him. “I saw you—before. Lying in the sand.”
“What?” He sweeps away the loose hairs sticking to my cheek. “I’m right here.” Concern deepens the contours of his face, and his brow crunches into a scowl as he puts a palm over my forehead. “Did you hit your head?” Cradling his arms underneath my body, he lifts me off the sand, up against him.
“Promise you’re not dead?” My voice slurs.
He chuckles, eyes darkening further. “Promise.”
Author Spotlight & Book Release ~ INSPIRED by Danielle E. Shipley
I have a special treat on the blog today. I’m sharing Danielle E. Shipley’s just released, INSPIRED
And we have a giveaway plus an interview with the author. 😉
Here’s a peek:
inspired coverInspired
by Danielle E. Shipley
Release Date: March 17, 2014
Target Reader: Adult
Keywords: Fiction
Description
For a muse like Lucianíel, one story’s end is another’s beginning.
In the wake of his author’s sudden death, Luc takes ownership of her surviving creations—four fantastical characters with tales yet to be told—saving them from unwritten lives crumbling around them and giving them a second chance at a literary future.
Luc finds that chance in the unsuspecting mind of Annabelle Iole Gray, a quirky teen with her head in the clouds, nose in a book, and imagination ripe for a brilliant muse’s inspiration.
Or so he hopes.
Neither Luc nor Annabelle, however, realize all they’ve undertaken. Even with a to-write list including accounts of a shape-shifting cat creature, gentle knight-in-training, vigilante skater girl, and a mystery boy smothering in unspoken fear, the most remarkable saga created between author and muse just may turn out to be one stranger than fiction.
Their own.
Let’s talk to Danielle about the book:
LM: How long have you been writing?
DS: Pretty much since I realized books didn’t just show up in Mommy’s hands for her to read to me – they’re made, and anyone with a grasp of words can make them! So I started grasping around age 5 or 6, and never let go.
LM: Did you always aspire to be an author?
DS: An author just for fun? Yes, always. A professional author? Not ‘til the realization in my late teens that authorhood is the only career I’ve got a heart for. So since then, I’ve followed the passion with everything I’ve got.
LM: Can you tell us what inspired you to write the story? 😉
DS: My favorite gang of muses: My characters! Most of the people I make up either don’t like me much or just don’t care, but a handful of them and I get along…well, as much as we get along with anybody. XD So I wanted to show what our crazy relationship is like, just with a little bit more of an actual plot. Trust me, no reader wants to wade through an accurate transcript of our nonsensical interactions.
LM: Who is your favorite character and why?
DS: Aw, that’s tough! Even assuming we’re narrowing it down to just the “Inspired” cast, I stand most in awe of Luc, but Wilbur’s the sweetest, while it’s so much fun to let my attitude out in Uri. If all the characters were about to fall off a mental cliff or something, though, I’d probably grab for Yves. I guess I feel the most maternal about him, since he looks like the character most desperately in need of a mother’s hug!
LM: Are you working on any new projects you’d like to share with us?
DS: April is Camp NaNoWriMo (the non-November version of National Novel Writing Month), and one of my other favorite muses (hi, Mom!) recently sparked some big plans for a book which just may involve some faces made familiar through “Inspired”. I’m excited to zoom through the first draft and see what the fictional folk do on the page!
LM: Plotter or Pantser?
DS: Plotter. Hard core. If I don’t have my 20-plus pages of chapter-by-chapter outline, I don’t feel half ready.
LM: What books are you currently reading, if any?
DS: It’s been a Book Two kind of reading scene, these days. Just finished Maggie Stiefvater’s “Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle #2)” and Rachel Bach’s “Honor’s Knight (The Paradox Trilogy #2)”; currently a few pages into A.G. Howard’s “Unhinged” (sequel to “Splintered”); and I’ve been working my way through a leisurely re-read of Stephen Lawhead’s “Scarlet (King Raven Trilogy #2)” for months, ‘cause it’s always pleasant to have a Robin Hood retelling chillin’ out in the background.
LM: Twitter or Facebook?
DS: Lately, Twitter. Technologically speaking, it tends to frustrate me less.
LM: Fantasy or Paranormal?
DS: Both! A wizard and a vampire time travel into a bar… I will read about that bar. I love a good genre-mash.
LM: Any tips you’d like to give aspiring writers hoping to be published one day?
DS: Write whatever the heck you want! Don’t be too hard on your work, but always push yourself to make it better. Don’t worry about what everybody else is writing; you do you. Know that reaching your goals may well take longer than the building of Rome, but hey, every little brick helps to keep the dream alive. And only let life make you bitter if you’re confident you can channel that vitriol into a smashing story.
LM: When you’re not writing, you are?
DS: Twitchy over the fact that I’m not writing. Working on production prep for my self-pubbed projects. Wasting time online. Squealing over BBC’s “Sherlock” with my cross-country BFF. Weeping my characters’ tears as they weather some out-of-book storm. Talking out the blues with my mom. Seriously wishing I were writing.
LM: Tea or Coffee?
DS: Tea! A friend got me hooked on a site that lets you create customs blends. I’ve got two character-inspired teas I’m drinking by the pot already, and there shall be more.
LM: Summer or Winter?
DS: Summer. I despise the cold and early darkness of winter. It kills my soul. …though it’s hoodies and tea season, so there’s that.
LM: I despise the cold too! Early bird or Night Owl?
DS: Night owl. I mean, I’d love to start my day early, but not if it means I have to consistently be in bed before midnight. Besides, my muse enjoys poking me between 1 and 2am.
LM: Favorite time to write?
DS: I like to get started first thing, otherwise distractions will push the start time back ‘til I’ve lost the morning. (I guess my brain really does see 1am as the magical genesis hour, because by the time we cross into the afternoon, my day feels half over – never mind that there are way more waking hours ahead of me than behind.) On the other hand, once I’ve started, I don’t want to stop, so the pm hours become my favorite, too. So I guess the short answer would have been “when I’m awake”. X)
Thanks so much, Danielle. 😉
Danielle E. Shipley’s first novelettes told the everyday misadventures of wacky kids like herself. …Or so she thought. Unbeknownst to them all, half of her characters were actually closeted elves, dwarves, fairies, or some combination thereof. When it all came to light, Danielle did the sensible thing: Packed up and moved to Fantasy Land, where daily rent is the low, low price of her heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears, firstborn child, sanity, and words; lots of them. She’s also been known to spend short bursts of time in the real-life Chicago area with the parents who homeschooled her and the two little sisters who keep her humble. When she’s not living the highs and lows of writing young adult novels, she’s probably blogging about it.
